India Republic Day
The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950. Since that day, Republic Day is celebrated on 26 January every year in India and India became an independent republic on this day. 26 January was chosen for Republic Day because in 1920, on 26 January, Congress declared independence against British rule.
Republic Day is celebrated with great fanfare every year near India Gate at Rajpath in Delhi. A spectacular parade at the Rajpath is performed on Republic Day by the regiment of the Indian Army, Navy, Air force, Police and other Paramilitary Forces in Delhi. In it, the Indian Army shows the latest missile, aircrafts and weapons, showing its force power. The tableaus of all the states is shown in the parade, in which their beauty, their way of life, their costumes, etc. are shown.
Millions of people come from different places to see the Republic Day parade. And every year India invites a guest on Republic Day and mostly is the Prime Minister and President of other countries.
15 August 1947 is a day on which India became independent from the British after many struggles. Jawaharlal Nehru became our first Prime Minister from the Congress Party, but independence did not come with democracy and the right to choose its own government, because India did not have a permanent constitution. Even after independence, our country was a constitutional monarchy under the rule of King George VI. Realizing the needs of the Constitution of India, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was entrusted with this task and a draft committee was established at 29th August, 1947. The purpose of this committee was to prepare the Constitution of India which would be a law of India.
The Constitution of India was originally written in Hindi and English language. The total words in the English version are 117,369, which contains 444 articles in 22 parts, 12 schedules and 115 amendments. India’s constitution is the longest in the world, with so much detailed writing. Both the versions, Hindi and English were hand written by Prem Behari Narain Raizada and it was published in Dehradun. Each and every page was decorated by artists from Shantiniketan including Beohar Rammanohar Sinha and Nandalal Bose. The original copy of the Indian Constitution, written in Hindi and English, has been kept in the library of Parliament of India.
The Constitution of India is the supreme law of India. It frames fundamental political principles, structure, procedures, practices, rights, powers, and duties of the government institutions and sets out fundamental rights and the duties of citizens.
The committee presented the first copy of the constitution to the assembly on 4 November 1947. Eventually it took 2 years 11 months and 18 days due to the necessary amendments to the Indian constitution. The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November, 1949. On 24 January 1950, 308 members of the legislative assembly signed two written copies (Hindi and English) of the document and 2 days later on 26 January 1950 it came into full effect, Since then India Republic Day is celebrated every year on 26 January.
